As the Miami Herald has reported, nine House Democrats have written to Secretary State Tillerson to urge U.S. support for negotiations and to refrain from economic sanctions “which could deepen the country’s economic and political crisis and undermine any movements toward dialogue and negotiations.” The letter was spearheaded by Congressional Progressive Caucus leaders John Conyers (D-Michigan), Ro Khanna (D-California), and Mark Pocan (D-Wisconsin). It places the responsibility for Venezuela’s crisis at the feet of the Maduro government, but urges the U.S. not to make matters even worse through punitive measures like an oil embargo.
