Evaluating U.S. Sanctions Policy Towards Venezuela

November 19, 2020 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

On Thursday, November 19 from 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. ET, the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) will host a virtual event with prominent experts on U.S. sanctions policy towards Venezuela. Panelists will consider the impact of sanctions on Venezuela’s crisis, whether U.S. sanctions have constrained the actions of the Maduro government, and to what extent they can or should be reformed to more effectively contribute to a democratic solution and alleviate the country’s humanitarian emergency.

The event comes after the publication of a WOLA report by Venezuelan economist Luis Oliveros entitled The Impact of Financial and Oil Sanctions on the Venezuelan Economy, which concludes that while Venezuela’s economic crisis has its roots in years of corruption and mismanagement, U.S. financial and oil sector sanctions have aggravated the crisis and contributed to a steep decline in imports.
