On April 12, the University of Chicago’s Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) hosted a webinar featuring WOLA Senior Fellow David Smilde to explore trends relating to crime, violence, and citizen security in Venezuela. The webinar, entitled “Understanding the Paradox of Violence in Venezuela,” delves into years of research, finding that: “the hypertrophic growth of the Venezuelan state, Chavismo’s revolutionary form of governance, failed police reform and the militarization of security, and the persistence of concentrated disadvantage all contributed to Venezuela’s dramatic levels of violent death.” A video recording of the discussion was recently posted on the University of Chicago’s CLAS YouTube page and can be found below:
