Mazes of Documents: How South America is Responding to Fleeing Venezuelans

October 22, 2020 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

On Thursday, October 22 at 10:30 a.m. EDT, the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA), along with the Centro de Estudios Legales y Sociales (CELS) and la Comisión Argentina para Refugiados y Migrantes (CAREF), will host a virtual event to mark the publication of the new report Mazes of Documents: Inequality and Migratory Regularization in South America. The event will explore the findings of the report, as well as the varied practices with regard to the regularization and protection of migrants in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Uruguay, with a special emphasis on Venezuelan migration. The panelists will discuss the variations in migration policy in these countries and the impact that these policies have had on Venezuelan migrants and refugees.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for a coordinated regional response to fleeing Venezuelans is more urgent than ever. In host countries, Venezuelans often face barriers to accessing health services and social security. Even further, the pandemic has caused restrictions on the ability to enter and leave territories. In the face of all of this, organizations across the region are growing louder in insisting on the immediate, permanent, and unrestricted regularization of Venezuelan migrants.

Join WOLA, CELS, and CAREF on October 22 at 10:30 a.m. EDT for an engaging discussion with regional experts on the findings of the Mazes of Documents report, and recommendations for a more inclusive and comprehensive regularization strategy. The link to participate in the event will be sent to registered participants.
